For all those who are dead sure a zombie apocalypse is on its way, this one is going to scare the bejesus out of you! The University of Leicester has done some rigorous mathematics on how long it would take zombies to take over the world, and the results are utterly terrifying!
In the case of the “inevitable” zombie attack, the research concluded that our world would survive only 100 days before the dead take over the Earth.
Physics students from the University also estimated that a mere 273 humans would remain alive after a zombie apocalypse at the end of first 100 days, the main reason of deaths being the spread of infections from the decaying bodies. The findings have been presented in the Journal of Physics Special Topics, which is a peer-reviewed student journal under the University’s Department of Physics and Astronomy.
Zombie apocalypse would potentially wipe out humanity in just 100 days, students calculate —University of Leicester: https://t.co/z33wbpxj2J

The underlying hypothesis was that a human would turn into a zombie nine times out ten if he has been attacked by a zombie. It also took in the assumption that a zombie could find at least one human a day. The calculations were made on how long the population could survive the SIR model, which is an epidemiological model describing the spread of a disease throughout a population.
The model divides the population into three categories; the susceptible population (S), Zombie (Z) and dead (D). The lifespan of a zombie, goes S, anti zombieZ,D. The model first estimated how many infected humans would come into contact with non-infected humans, and the probability of spreading the zombie virus to others.
Natural birth and death rates were not considered as a timescale of 100 days is too small to make it a factor worth considering. The horrific end results showed human survival rates to be close to zero, with only a handful of people surviving the calamity.
Now this might make you all ready to jump into your anti-zombie bunkers, but there is still hope! In a follow-up study, students suggested the conditions in which humans could hold out against the zombie apocalypse and which would prolong the survival of our species. Their study concluded that by killing off zombies and reproducing at an astonishing rate, we could fend off the monsters.
This would make sense, according to the researchers, as more humans beings born and raised around the freak shows from hell would get immune to the infections, and will be able to deal with the monsters.
Dr. Mervyn Roy, a lecturer at the University of Leicester’s Department of Physics and Astronomy, and these students’ course tutor, commented on the research,
“Every year we ask students to write short papers for the Journal of Physics Special Topics. It lets the students show off their creative side and apply some of physics they know to the weird, the wonderful, or the everyday.”
Do you think you are tough enough to fend off zombies for more than 100 days?
